Laminated Architectural Glass

Laminated Glass - Design & Installation Versatility

Because laminated glazing can be composed of annealed, heat strengthened or fully tempered glass and can include wired, patterned, tinted and reflective glasses there is an incredible array of potential appearances and characteristics. Annealed laminated glass is very simple to install, can be cut to size on site and can also be drilled or notched as required. Other safety glass cannot be modified after it has been tempered.

Architectural applications include

Safety glazings Acoustical glazing
Sloped glazing and skylights Building entrances
Storefronts Display cases
Protection of stained-glass /art Exterior and curtain walls
Detention and other institutional glazing General building partitions for offices
Security glazing Bullet resistant glazing
Balustrades Zoo habitats
Hurricane resistant material

Everlam Laminated Glass

Everlam is produced in standard sizes up to 96" x 144" in thicknesses up to 80mm (3"). Laminated glass is a safety glazing material made by bonding layers of glass with one or more layers of PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayer using heat and pressure. It can be composed using sheets of annealed, heat strengthened or fully tempered glass, depending on your design needs and will exhibit important structural performance and safety features along with other benefits.

Safety

The PVB interlayer absorbs the energy of the impact, resisting penetration. Although the laminated glass may break, the glass fragments remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, minimizing the risk of personal injury.

In glass skylites, sloped glazing installations and architectural wall systems there is always the possibility of glass breakage. Without laminated glass this could mean a big safety problem caused by falling glass.

Longevity

Laminated glass is durable, maintaining its color and strength for the life of the building, and is as easily cleaned as ordinary glass.

Low Visible Distortion

Laminated building glass is usually glazed in annealed form, avoiding the distortion caused by "roller wave" in tempered and heat-strengthened glass. This ensures that the reflection created on your building will always be clear and true as opposed to distorted.

Ultra Violet Protection

All PVB absorbs a minimum of 99.6% of the short wavelength UV radiation up to 380 nanometers. This dramatically reduces damage from fading, bleaching and drying out of furnishings. This UV absorption does not affect growing plants or visible light because the wavelengths from 400 to 700 nm are not affected.

Sun Control

Solar heat gain and light transmission can be controlled to provide the exact comfort level that you wish. This is accomplished by potentially including special PVB or other interlayers or utilizing reflective / tinted substrates that may also be silk-screened to provide a specific shading factor. This can include: ¨ Heat retention characteristics through incorporating Low-E glass on the inner surface to reflect the radiated long wave radiation back inside the enclosed area ¨ Heat rejection can be accommodated by incorporating heat absorbing / heat reflecting glass on the exterior and by incorporating a Low-E characteristic within the sandwich to reject heat from outside so air conditioning requirements are kept as low as possible, while still providing the desired amount of light.

Sound Control

Laminated glass cancels out sound frequencies by absorbing sound rather than transmitting it. The area of sound reduction generally occurs between 125 Hz and 4,000 Hz. This is a major benefit where there are normal high ambient noise levels, which could otherwise reduce the level of quality of life. An STC rating of 39 is achieved in a simple 1" over all thickness double-glazed unit incorporating one lite of 6mm .030 laminated glass.

Fire Retardance

Ordinary glass tends to shatter on exposure to heat and flame allowing air to flow through and provide the oxygen necessary for continued combustion. Standard laminated glass does not disintegrate readily on exposure to heat and flames. Although basic laminated glass does not meet fire code requirements, the code can be met by incorporating polished wired float glass into the composition. The resulting sandwich can prevent the spread of fire for up to 60 minutes.

Security - Burglar Resistance

Laminated glass can be configured to offer intrusion resistance - from burglary, or bullets or explosions - without compromising light transmission and visibility.

ASTM F 1233 Standard defines various security levels as follows:

  • Low- level attacks from hand held implements of short duration
  • Burglar-resistant determined break-in efforts of smash-and-grab burglaries
  • High security determined main force attack to gain entry or exit
  • Bullet-resistant resist penetration from medium- to super powered small arms and high-power rifles

    Everlam Laminated Glass complies with ANSI Z97.1, CPSC 16CFR 1201 CAT 1 & CAT 2 and CAN/CGSB -12.1-M90.

Everlam Glass can meet your most exacting design structural needs.
